Are you searching for a deliciously simple treat that your kids can help make without you having to turn on the oven? Look no further. This festive rocky road recipe is the answer. It’s a delightful jumble of chocolate, crunchy biscuits, and chewy marshmallows that is incredibly fun to make and even more fun to eat. It is the ultimate no-bake recipe for kids.
As we are in the middle of the year here in South Africa, this is one of our favourite Christmas in July ideas to bring some cheer to the winter months. More than just a sweet snack, making rocky road is a brilliant sensory activity. The act of breaking biscuits and mixing different textures is wonderful for developing motor skills and engaging a child’s senses, a key component of early learning as highlighted by child development resources like UNICEF Parenting. It’s one of the best homeschool holiday activities you can do.

- 200g unsalted butter
- 600g Tennis or digestive biscuits, broken into pieces
- 300g mini-marshmallows
- 200g pecan nuts, chopped

Let’s Make Rocky Road: A Simple Guide
- Child’s Task: Let your child have the important job of breaking the biscuits into bite-sized chunks. This is their favourite part!
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the broken biscuits, mini-marshmallows, chopped nuts, and cranberries.
- Parent’s Task: In a separate heat-proof bowl, melt the chocolate and butter together in the microwave. Do this in short 40-second bursts, stirring in between, until smooth.
- Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients.
- Child’s Task: Hand the wooden spoon over and let them stir everything together until it is completely coated in chocolate.
- Press the mixture firmly into a glass tray lined or sprayed with non-stick spray.
- Chill in the fridge for at least two hours, or until completely firm.
- Once set, cut your rocky road into squares and enjoy one of the most easy festive treats you will ever make.
