The Answer Series | Gr 7 Mathematics Pilot Project
Mathematics is a subject that can inspire either a deep love, or a deep sense of anxiety in learners. Often, the deciding factor is confidence — and confidence grows when learners understand why something works, have meaningful opportunities to practise, and receive the right support when concepts become challenging.
This is one of the reasons The Answer Series has placed a strong emphasis on developing clear, accessible and supportive Mathematics resources. Our recent Grade 7 Mathematics Pilot Project gave us an exciting opportunity to take this approach into primary schools and see how learners and teachers respond in the actual classroom situation.
Taking Mathematics into the primary-school years
The Grade 7 pilot involved 13 schools across all nine provinces, with more than 1 000 learners taking part and 1 215 books distributed.
The project had two important objectives:
- Introduce our new Grade 7 Mathematics book to the primary-school market and experience how it works in a real classroom environment
- Give teachers and learners access to quality Mathematics content at a particularly important stage in their mathematical journey
Grade 7 is a significant transition year. Learners are moving towards the more demanding Mathematics they will encounter in the senior grades, making it an ideal time to consolidate concepts, develop good problem-solving habits and build confidence.
For parents and home schoolers, this principle is just as relevant. A learner does not suddenly become confident in Mathematics in Grade 10. Confidence develops over time, through a strong understanding of foundational concepts and positive experiences with solving problems.
Making Mathematics accessible
At The Answer Series, our approach is centred on making concepts as clear and approachable as possible.
Our Mathematics material provides:
- Clear explanations and worked examples that learners can return to when they need additional support.
- A wide range of questions aimed at different levels of ability, allowing learners to develop, from practising basic concepts through to tackling more cognitively demanding questions.
Importantly, every question has a full solution. This is not simply about giving learners the correct answer. Working through a solution can help learners understand where they went wrong, identify the thinking process involved and learn how to approach a similar problem independently next time.
The pilot feedback suggests that this approach is making a positive difference in classrooms. Teachers have described the Grade 7 book as user-friendly, age-appropriate and well aligned with CAPS, with a variety of questions that they have found particularly useful. They have also highlighted how the resource supports learners with different abilities within the same classroom.
One teacher commented:
“Even struggling learners are doing better!”
Another described the book as:
“The most effective book I have ever seen!”
Teachers have also highlighted the value of the Answer Book, because it reduces preparation time and serves as an effective learning tool for learners by providing full solutions.
As one teacher put it:
“It makes teaching so easy.”
Another teacher said:
“I have new hope for the term!”
Building towards future Mathematics success
Perhaps one of the most important lessons from the pilot is that Mathematics confidence is closely linked to understanding.
Learners become active and independent participants in their own learning when they have access to understandable explanations, clear worked examples and enough practice opportunities.
Preparing learners for complex high school Mathematics requires the building of a solid primary school foundation. Success in higher grades depends on developing early skills in number concepts, algebraic thinking, problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
Our goal is not simply to help learners get through a Mathematics test. It is to help them develop the thinking skills, logic and understanding that underpin Mathematics.
One pilot teacher captured this beautifully, saying:
“I am inspired to increase the level of cognitive development I want my learners to reach.”
That is exactly the kind of response we hope to encourage.
