This August issue lands at an important time for the matric class of 2026. Finishing school no longer means following one set path. With youth unemployment still high, the focus is turning towards resilience and practical skills.
This month’s features look at how higher learning readiness is being rethought. Kagiso Trust has launched its Makers of the Future toolkit, a free resource that helps learners cope with exam pressure and introduces them to options such as technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges.
Vocational paths and structured learnerships are proving to be a strong route to economic independence by pairing classroom teaching with real workplace experience. Demand for technology skills also means digital education is now central to future job security. From coding to specialised qualifications like Inscape’s Bachelor of Design in Ideation Design, young people are learning to think for themselves rather than just memorise facts.
The high school experience is changing too. Some alternative schools now combine a structured timetable with more flexibility. Flanders Campus offers robotics and other tech-focused learning, while Praxis Education runs Independent Examinations Board (IEB) pathways through full-time campus study or a hybrid model. For families still working through university applications, we also look at public and private institutions with later registration deadlines, so options stay open a bit longer.
