Getting Started: What You’ll Need

This recipe uses simple ingredients, perfect for cooking with kids.

Ingredients:

  • 500g Cherry Tomatoes
  • 1 Red Onion, chopped
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, crushed
  • 60ml (4 Tablespoons) Olive Oil
  • 250g Smooth Cream Cheese (any flavour)
  • 1 Packet Streaky Bacon, cubed and fried crispy (optional)
  • 300g Pasta (your choice)
  • 60ml (4 Tablespoons) Fresh Basil, finely chopped
  • 100g Baby Spinach Leaves
  • 1 Red Pepper, cut in small cubes
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Equipment:

  • Large Baking Dish
  • Frying Pan (if using bacon)
  • Large Pot
  • Knife (adult supervision needed!)
  • Big Spoon

Let’s Cook Together: Simple Steps

Hereโ€™s how to make this dish, with ideas for getting children involved:

  1. Preheat: Turn your oven to 200ยฐC. Kid Task: Older children can help set the oven temperature with supervision.
  2. Prep Veggies: Place tomatoes, onions, garlic, red pepper and olive oil in the baking dish. Kid Task: Younger children can help wash tomatoes or place pre-chopped items in the dish.
  3. Season: Sprinkle with salt and pepper; mix gently. Kid Task: Let them do the sprinkling!
  4. Add Cheese & Bacon: Place the cream cheese block in the centre. Add crispy bacon around it (if using). Kid Task: Carefully placing the cream cheese.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the oven for 30 minutes.
  6. Cook Pasta: While the sauce bakes, cook pasta in the large pot following packet instructions. Kid Task: Stirring pasta occasionally (use caution near hot water).
  7. Drain Pasta: Drain pasta, keeping about 150ml (ยพ cup) of the cooking water.
  8. Mix Sauce: Carefully remove the baking dish. Stir well. Gently mash softened tomatoes with a fork into the melted cheese. Kid Task: Mashing soft tomatoes (once slightly cooled) is fun!
  9. Combine: Stir the reserved pasta water into the sauce. Add spinach and basil; stir until spinach wilts.
  10. Finish: Add cooked pasta to the dish. Mix thoroughly until coated.
